Franklin, Massachusetts is a suburban industrial community between the Charles and Blackstone Rivers. Settlement came after King Philip’s war in 1676. In the 18th and 19th centuries, cotton mills, felt makers and boot and shoe manufacturers were established, but the dominant industry was the making of straw bonnets.
Originally known as Exeter, Franklin renamed itself in honor of Benjamin Franklin in 1778. Over 30 communities in the colonies eventually honored Franklin as well, but the Massachusetts town of Franklin was the first to do so. To show his appreciation of the tribute, Ambassador Franklin sent the town 116 print volumes which formed the nucleus of a public library.
Franklin takes great pride in its wide spectrum of architectual styles. Visitors and residents alike enjoy historical buildings in the Greek revival, Italiante, High Victorian Gothic, Second Empire and Queen Ann styles.
