Noted Bandmaster Patrick Gilmore wrote the lyrics for this tune when his band was attached to the 24th Massachusetts Infantry. The tune is the same as the Irish song “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye” but there is some dispute as to which came first.
“Johnny” did not refer to “Johnny Reb” but most likely Gilmore’s future brother-in-law, a Union army officer. The story behind the song is on the Library of Congress website.

The first page of the song (Louis Lambert was a pseudonym of Gilmore’s) bears a dedication at the top “to the army and the navy of the Union”. This was not a Confederate song.

I’ve just completed a pet project that I’ve been working on for the past couple of months, in my down time.
It is a trance/drum and bass remix (by remix, I mean that I’ve used his melodies, bass notes, and chords to create my own version - from scratch - of his song) of Sam Hulick’s Mass Effect Opening song, which can be heard in the E3 ‘06 Demo Video. I’ve also added some of my own unique/original melodies and basslines, to spice it up a bit.
With that said, let’s get the legal stuff out of the way:
This remix was inspired by the intellectual property of Sam Hulick. I claim no rights to this music, as this is a fan-remix I have created solely for recreational purposes; I also don’t intend to receive any monetary gains from this song/remix.
