FALMOUTH, MA- Cable Guys Rescue Woman from house Fire

Author: admin  //  Category: ma property

WOODS HOLE — Sometimes the cable guy has a good reason for showing up late.

Jim MacConnell and Tom Masciulli, two Comcast technicians, helped save an 88-year-old woman from a fire yesterday that ravaged a home at 122 Gardiner Road overlooking Buzzards Bay.

Woods Hole House FireThe names of the homeowners were not released, but 2007 records show the property is assessed at $2.4 million and is owned by Frederick and Marguerite Smith, both 88.

MacConnell and Masciulli, the two repairmen, had installed a phone line at 124 Gardiner Road around 11:45 a.m. and were preparing to leave when the homeowner flagged them down because the phone had stopped working.

They never imagined a temporary equipment failure would end up saving a life.

Just moments later, an elderly neighbor came running out of the house next door, screaming about a fire in his home and his wife trapped inside, MacConnell said. He and Masciulli tried the side door but it was locked, so the pair raced around to the back of the house, where they entered through a rear door. MacConnell said there was heavy, black smoke throughout the house that made it difficult to search for the woman.

Finally, they spotted her at the top of the stairs trying to get to the bottom floor.

With flames flickering just behind her on the second floor, MacConnell and Masciulli walked her out of the burning home to safety. “There was so much black smoke and she had soot all over her face,” MacConnell said, while watching firefighters battle the blaze. “If we had left, it’s just my opinion, but if we weren’t here she would’ve perished.”

Irene O’Connell, who lives in the house where the installers were working, said she panicked when she saw the smoke coming from next door. If not for MacConnell and Masciulli, O’Connell said she dreads what would have happened.

“They’re the real heroes today,” O’Connell said as she hugged MacConnell and thanked him.

O’Connell said neither Fred nor Marguerite “Peggy” Smith required treatment at Falmouth Hospital, and will stay temporarily at the Woods Hole Inn nearby.

Their son lives in Fitchburg and was on his way to the Cape yesterday afternoon, O’Connell said.

Police and fire officials at the scene said no one received life-threatening injuries, although one Falmouth firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and another had a shoulder injury, said Falmouth fire Deputy Chief Glen Rogers. He declined to release their names.

The home is likely a total loss, Rogers said.

Although it has been determined the fire started on the second floor, he said the cause is still under investigation.

Crews from Falmouth, Mashpee, Bourne and the Massachusetts Military Reservation Fire Department helped battle the blaze, with flames reaching 30 feet into the air. Rogers said moderately sufficient water pressure and southwest winds pushing the flames toward a nearby home and trees made battling the fire difficult.

Rogers said the smoke was so heavy upon arrival that crews had a difficult time locating the driveway and fire hydrants.

Firefighters from Plymouth and Cotuit provided mutual aid.

Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) — Elizabeth Warren, chairwoman of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, talks with Bloomberg’s Betty Liu about the outlook for community banks that have exposure to commercial real estate loans.
Warren, speaking from Newton, Massachusetts, also discusses the need for so-called stress tests on community banks. Commercial real estate loans have potential to go sour and wreck the U.S. economy unless regulators prepare now, according to a report from the watchdog for the federal financial rescue program. BOURNE - A 22-year-old Bourne resident is dead and the man charged with killing him is being treated in a Boston hospital for multiple stab wounds.

In addition, five other people have been charged with home invasions after police said they broke into houses early this morning while searching for the man they believed killed Daniel E. Cardoza, 22, of Bourne, according to police.

Charged with killing him is Caleb S. Greeson, 18, of Bourne. Greeson remains in custody at a Boston hospital where he was taken by helicopter early this morning after he was found with multiple stab wounds not far from the Hoxie School, said OKeefe.

OKeefe said police have been given a number of possible motives for the fight between Cardoza and Greeson, “but nothing is firm enough to be aired at this time,” he said. “Whatever the reason for the fight, it wasnt enough to justify this outcome.”

An autopsy will be performed later on Cardozas body.

According to OKeefe, Bourne police were called to the Canal Street Shell Station around 10:30 p.m. to investigate a fight. When they arrived, they found Cardoza on the ground bleeding from multiple wounds. Bourne firefighters took him by ambulance to Jordan Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Within the next two hours, police began receiving reports about home invasions, according to OKeefe.

“They were apparently trying to avenge Mr. Cardoza and went looking for Mr. Gleeson,” OKeefe said of those suspected in the home invasions. “They broke into several homes before they were apprehended by police.”

As Bourne police and state police detectives igned to the Cape and Islands District Attorneys office investigated the first attack, Bourne police received a call about a large commotion at the Ella F. Hoxie Elementary School in Sagamore Beach around 12:15.

Upon arrival, they found Greeson on the ground suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was airlifted to a Boston hospital. His exact condition is not known at this time, but OKeefe said initial reports indicate that he will survive.

Greeson will be arraigned at a later date, depending upon the circumstances of his health, OKeefe said,

Police are searching for more people who are believed to have been involved in the fight and the stabbings. No weapons have been discovered. At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, state police K-9 units were searching the area around the Shell gas station.

Scheduled to be arraigned in Falmouth District Court today on charges of unarmed burglary are:

Samantha L. Victorino, 21, of 16 Blanding Road, Rehoboth; Michael Eugene Almeida, 29, of 95 Shore Road, Fairhaven; Michael James Pina, 24, of 154 Spring St. Marion; Kenneth W. Lightford Jr., 30, 45 Battles Farm Drive, Brockton; and Robert Frank Cardoza Jr., 39, 6 Steepbank Road, East Wareham.

Its called problem reaction solution..order out of chaos.. The Massachusetts Senate has unanimously passed a pandemic flu preparation bill that has languished in the Legislature before the recent swine flu outbreak.

The 36-0 vote today sends the measure to the House. Both branches have taken it up in past years, but have not been able to agree on the details.

The new Senate version would allow the public health commissioner — in a public health emergency — to close or evacuate buildings, enter private property for investigations, and quarantine individuals.
